Originally from the Washington, DC Area, he has designed sound, composed and engineered for numerous theatre companies of all sizes including Shakespeare Theatre, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Geographic Society, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Joseph Papp Public Theatre, Wolf Trap Farm Park, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Studio Theatre, Wooly Mammoth Theatre Company, Signature Theatre and Round House Theatre where he was the Resident Sound Designer for five years.

Nielson has won several awards for his theatre work, including four Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Sound Design and a League of Cincinnati Theatres nomination. He has been instrumental in shaping the course of theatrical sound design in the DC theatre community. Nielson wrote, directed, recorded, designed and scored the popular radio drama Troublesome Gap with his audio-theatre troop The Audible Group

Nielson has scored, designed and mixed many films, television shows, web series, local and national commercials, and network branding packages. His work in film has garnered several nominations and awards.
